Gwennive questioned impatiently as she flipped through the book without getting anything helpful from it.

The scent of aged paper filled the air, mingling with the subtle hint of burning wax. She had spent hours pouring over the text, meticulously taking notes on anything that seemed remotely useful. The book contained knowledge lost to time, secrets about the origins of their kind, forgotten magic, and hidden weaknesses that could turn the tide of war.

“Isn’t Priscilla your lapdog? And if you can’t keep her in check, how the hell do you expect her to keep her own minions in check?” I nearly snarled where I stood. Lapdog, my ass. If I wanted to, I could turn that silver spoon-fed whore inside out. But Selena had her leash around me because of that secret. That fucking secret I let her hold over me like a crown. But not for long. “I just need one last thing,” Selena said softly. “A spell.” Her father went quiet. “A spell,” she repeated, “to deceive the Apex brothers. To make them think like I’m their fated mate.”
