Something that belonged entirely to me. So, I reached for my laptop.It hummed to life, the screen’s light spilling softly .My fingers moved automatically, opening a bookmarked link I hadn’t touched in weeks. The page loaded, and there it was , the website I had built myself, one long night when hope had still felt tangible. Vivëe. The name stretched across the homepage in bold, elegant letters. My firm. My dream. The start of everything I had wanted for myself before the chaos began.I stared at the screen for a long time. The design wasn’t perfect, the colors needed tweaking, but it was mine.

But when I reach for the plate, I see it—cracked clean down the middle, broken from where I dropped it in my stupid anger. “Damn it,” I pick up the broken pieces, tossing them in the trash with more force than necessary. “Screw you, Jack,” I whisper bitterly. “Get out of my damn head.” I dry my hands, pacing the kitchen once before storming out. I have a letter to write. I push open the bedroom door and step inside with a sigh. I made my way to the drawers of the bedside table; my fingers fumbled through it—empty, of course. Sighing loudly, I walked over to the kitchenette to make myself another coffee. "I know the feeling," Becca groaned from where she was sitting on the couch, phone in hand. "Still no luck for you either?" "Nada," she replied. Her work was even harder to find than mine. She was a self-published author, working mainly in freelance journalism while she tried to grow her following. "You'll get there, Becs," I tried to offer some sort of encouragement, but ended up sounding completely defeated. "Somehow, we will both get there."

I had not turned off my laptop yet. "Mr. Lawson, I'll just finish up with a few more files before we go." Shane was such a workaholic. Whenever work was mentioned, he was all ears, nodding along. I moved the mouse to save a document. However, as I did, I felt Shane stiffen in my arms. I clicked on another window. Shane grunted as if on cue. What was happening? I... On the corner, in smaller script, I wrote: SIGNED, WILLA ROANE. The letters glowed brighter than any I’d written before. Not because they had more power. Because they were attached to a person I was choosing to be. Author. Not content. Not fuel. Not god. Just someone who had been given a pen in a very broken room and done her best not to make it worse.
