On her first year at CITS High, Kate – more precisely her parents – made the mistake of not reading the Student’s Handbook and buying a pair of fashionable bumblebee-yellow sneakers. Having spent quite a hefty sum on the pair, it would take quite a while before Mr. and Mrs. Lapuz was in the mood to buy Kate a replacement; school policy or not. Plus, the shoe store had a strict no-return-no-exchange policy. So Kate had to improvise. She got the black duct tape from her pa’s toolbox and worked all night on her DIY shoes project.

Leo and Lyra stepped out onto the sidewalk. The taxi sped off, splashing a puddle of dirty water onto Leo’s pristine white sneakers. "My Jordans!" Leo gasped. "Those were limited edition!" "They're 'Smith' shoes now," Lyra reminded him, hoisting her duffel bag. "Suck it up." They stood before the gates of Veridia University. It was massive. Gothic stone buildings mixed with modern glass labs. Thousands of students swarmed the quad. But unlike the Fortress, where silence was a luxury, this place was a riot of noise. Music blared from portable speakers. Students shouted across the lawn. Skateboards clattered on pavement.

Cassidy’s POV Uni loomed ahead as I stepped out of Dante's SUV on shaky legs, the campus quad bustling with students rushing between classes, backpacks slung over shoulders, coffee cups steaming in the crisp spring air. The scent of blooming cherry blossoms wafted from the trees lining the paths, petals drifting lazily to the ground like confetti from some unseen celebration.

ATHENA The humid air hung heavy in Bruin Plaza, a thick, stagnant layer of smog that tasted faintly of roasted street corn, overpriced espresso, and cheap hairspray. Strolling into the center of the campus rally, the environment felt less like a university event and more like a low-budget teen movie set. Students roamed the concrete walkways in unhinged costumes—two guys sprinted past us trapped inside giant, overheating inflatable bear suits, while a group of dance majors in vintage 80s neon fitness gear practiced a routine near the steps.

I stand up briefly to show her what it looks like, and then I take the phone to show her the shoes, which are simple 1930s-style closed-toe white pumps with a thin strap that goes over the top of my feet. She wolf-whistles, making me shyly giggle from behind my cup. “Yes, I bought two last week, the other is a navy colour. They are perfect for school because they hide most of my tattoos. It gets annoying having to cover them up with makeup.” I huff. “I like the innocent, sophisticated yet subtle sexy vibe.” She nods in approval, gesturing with her hand up and down. “What’s the point in having them then?” She teasingly tuts, and I sigh.
