His hands rest at his sides, gloved, as if he’s always ready to strike. I can’t see his face. It’s hidden under the hood of his coat, casting deep shadows that obscure everything but his eyes—sharp and cold, gleaming in the dark. But what catches me, what freezes me in place, are the ropey scars that circle them, uneven and jagged, like someone tried to carve them out and failed. Or maybe something else. I don’t know. Those scars pull tight whenever he blinks, a grotesque reminder of something violent.

Half of his pale, deathly face was exposed through his torn black robe. In addition to his grotesque and terrifying features, his crimson pupils took on a diamond-like shape, resembling those of a viper. His appearance was far from ordinary; it bore an unsettling resemblance to that of a zombie. Yet, what truly horrified them was the ghastly sight of the Shadow Guardian's exposed right arm. It was covered in sutures, with nails that were unusually sharp, resembling those of a wild beast's. It looked as though his arm had been pieced together from countless human torsos.

Dupree, with his rune-infused blade, fended off the Shadows, each strike causing them to momentarily dissipate. Seraphina and I focused on the chest, attempting to harness its energy. As we channeled our combined powers, the chest began to glow brighter, emitting a frequency that seemed to disorient the Shadows. Moros, seizing the opportunity, shouted, "Now! Push them back!" With a collective effort, we unleashed a wave of energy, forcing the Shadows to retreat. But just as victory seemed within grasp, the ground trembled beneath us, and from the abyss, a colossal Shadow emerged, its presence dwarfing the others.

“I wanna spar with you. And maybe, make you mine?” No sooner had Spider completed her words than a five-armed shuriken came flying towards her, aiming at her neck. She immediately bent her body backward, dodging it. ‘Oh my God, Miss Shadow, that was so unexpected,” Spider said, her voice masked with astonishment. “You should have warned me.” Shadow’s eyebrows twitched. She had the urge to wipe that invisible, confident, annoying smile off Spider’s face. Taking out her katana, she lashed out.

Dior's lips part when I smile at him, and it's as if an inner voice tells him I mean trouble because I can see his arm reaching out to close the door. Of course, I won't let him. My foot press between the door and doorframe, and then a flock of shadows snicker as I let them seize my enemy. The other me tries to teleport as soon as hands and darkened limbs reach around his ankles, making my smile falter—I immediately click with my fingers, summoning more shadows.

Relief beamed on his face. The masked men turned toward me. Silver arrows whistled through the air. I leaned low over my Harley and let my shadow power rise. Dark threads spilled from my hands. One scout’s bike flipped as my power slammed into it. The rider tumbled across the ice. I did not stop. Another shadow blade cut the second rider’s arm and forced him to drop his bow. Jax fought beside me now. His blade flashed. He fought better this time, but one of the enemies struck him. Blood sprayed across the ice.

Useless against what awaited them. The Shadow Knight moved, flowing between petrified trunks to position himself behind the rearmost pair. These would be the least experienced, assigned to guard the formation's back. Their nervousness betrayed them, heads swivelling too quickly, hands gripping weapons too tightly. He rose from darkness directly between them. Before either could shout warning, shadow-tendrils lashed out, wrapping around throats, cutting off sound. Their blessed weapons passed through his insubstantial form, finding nothing solid to strike. He solidified only his hands, reaching into armoured chests to clutch beating hearts.
