The sound vibrated through the ground. “Brave words, Alpha. But your time is over.” He swung one enormous fist. I ducked under it and slashed upward with my blade, cutting deep into the shadow wrapping his arm. Black energy hissed where steel met darkness. Thorn growled and countered with a backhand that caught me across the shoulder. Pain exploded down my arm, but I stayed on my feet.

His face contorted in pain, and suddenly, his grip failed him as he plummeted from the sky. I dashed forward, my heart racing, and leaped to cover Jim with my body. Adam fought with all his strength to keep the blade away but the blade was gaining ground. Adam shouted and exerted the last of his energy. Hugo smirked.
