Juliette places her hand on Fennec’s shoulder. “DON’T!” I snarl. I’m completely out of my mind. My body acts on its own accord. I manage to rip an arm free while Fraser is distracted by Fennec’s Shadowsynger powers erupting and swirling around the trio in a vortex of shadow. My arm isn’t my own, though. A beastly paw whips toward Fraser’s head, and my talons tear across his face. He shouts. Fennec’s shadows fade, leaving behind empty space.

I said, Keith's glass clinked with mine and we drank to Sinclair's newfound joy as a father. Then the glass shattered behind us and every head turned. “You wanna do this here? Fine!” someone barked, launching himself forward as claws slid from his knuckles. “What the hell?" Keith muttered beside me. “We don't do that here." That you’ll be nothing more than a coward.” Jamie’s bravado faltered, his grip on the skateboard tightening. “Shut up,” he said, his voice low. “You don’t know me.” The shadow stepped closer, its presence suffocating. “I am you. And you know I’m right.”

I shot it up out of the ground, but he sensed it as he stepped to the side. He wasn't fast enough to avoid it entirely as it scratched the side of his arm, letting the deep crimson of his blood run down his arm. I had cut him deep and he scowled at me like he couldn't believe I had hurt him. His shadow wrapped around my waist and squeezed tightly. His shadow was so damn thick, thicker than Al's. That made them slower than mine, so even though he had a shadow wrapped around my waist I had two wrapped around him, one on each arm. I had a third crawling up his body towards his neck.
