It spoke in her voice: “You think love saves everything. But what of envy, grief, and anger? You cast them away.” Liora backed away, shaking. “They destroy.” “They belong,” the shadow hissed. “They are the roots of compassion. Without them, warmth becomes pride.” Her pendant flared — gold clashing against crimson. She saw her past clearly: every wound she had refused to feel, every loss she had buried in duty. She whispered, “Then let me feel it now.” The shadow smiled and reached for her hand. Their palms touched — and the world exploded with color. ---

She cried out as some of it hit her, burning with the most agonising pain she'd ever experienced, like her very existence was being melted away wherever it touched. She moved further around the column, placing it between her and the light, and cast both hands out towards those she'd felt hiding in here, screaming as in insane amount of dark power rushed through her. Her shadowy aura reached out to those she'd come with, drawing even more of that agony through her, and out through her hands, where it split five ways, and then more, as others rushed in from other rooms, and one by one they blinked out of existence as her shadows hit them, carrying the wounds from her friends.

I knew that Shadow's pain was deep and real, and that it would take time to heal. I knew that he felt lost and alone, and that he was struggling to come to terms with the betrayal of his mate. "I'm so sorry, Shadow," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "I wish I could take away your pain, but I can't. All I can do is stand here with you, and offer you my support and friendship." Shadow looked at me, his eyes searching, and I could see the depth of his sorrow. He nodded, a small movement, and I knew that he appreciated my words, even if they couldn't take away his pain.

The witches closed in, their laughter echoing like a chorus of nightmares. Something inside Aqua snapped. A surge of dark energy, unfamiliar and terrifying, welled up within her. She felt her pendant grow hot against her skin, the clear crystal turning black as smoke. The air around her crackled with raw power as she turned back towards the attackers, her fear morphing into a blinding rage.

White hot pain rips and tears through me as every bone in my body cracks, breaks and extends before jutting itself into place. Screams and howls of pain fill the air, dulled only by the trees and my own pain consuming me. Canines lengthening and claws stretching out, and yet, still I can feel my body is covered in something warm and wet. I sniff the air. Blood. So much blood. Sweet, warm, red liquid copper. Soon the pain dulls to warm rather than hot, and screams become howls and growls in the distance. I join in, yanking and pulling at the chain until my neck hurts so much I think my head might fall right off my shoulders. And then, everything goes black.

Marcus, Ethan, Callum, and Davian joined me, their energy blazing, but the shards were fast, multiplying, spreading like wildfire. The wolves barked, howled, leapt… but it wasn’t enough. I could feel my pack’s strength being sapped, their energy draining into the shadows. Panic surged, and with it, rage. I let out a roar, golden light exploding outward, and for a moment… the forest went silent. Every shard froze midair, suspended by the sheer force of my energy. I gasped, chest heaving, sweat dripping down my face. But then… I felt it. Something deeper, colder, far more ancient. The shadow had only tested us. This figure… the orchestrator… it was coming. And it wasn’t alone.
