It’s the first time I’ve seen the shadows in the light, and the effect is even more eerie because my brain knows they should vanish—but they don’t. The fourth shadow appears from nowhere and launches at me again. I whip my knife out of the holster at my hip and lash out at the dark shape. Even though I don’t miss, the blade slices right through the shadow without doing a bit of damage. “Son of a bitch!” I duck another darting attack, then do a tuck and roll away from the beds toward where the feral shifters are fighting their shadows.

Lila pounced, ripping out his throat with a snarl that was far too mature for her age.

Steel-Fist Predator said calmly but mocked him internally “Steel-fist while what you say makes sense I think Sword-saint still has a point, killing a child just because of such trivialities seems utterly absurd.” Flame-heart predator replied Steel-fist predator with a sneer “It seems Flame-heart has forgotten the history lessons we got when we were still basic Hunters, the only times glass-eyed Hunters appeared, they almost destroyed the entire race single handedly, unless you want a replay of the Great Massacre I’d advise we end the kid to avoid future troubles.” White-haired predator said grimly

Behind them, the assassins of the Obsidian Creed moved like shadows within shadows, slipping between the defenders with blades drawn for the kill. Eolan’s shadow lashed out, tripping one mercenary and dragging another into the air before smashing him against a pillar. The heir cut two down in a single sweeping arc, her blade ringing against an assassin’

he said sarcastically, rolling his eyes. “I'm going to kill you!” she growled, trying to claw at his face. “Not today, and I'd be careful on the threats, your best friend will be next if you decide to disobey me again,” he said pushing her away. “We're always watching, now that I know how to summon you, maybe I'll punish you, there for a while,” he said before disappearing. Abey looked down at her Grandfather. The Chief wandered close by. “This is a bad omen, you must leave. You are plagued by Shadows, scat, scat.” he hissed at her.

Vivian screamed, clutching her wrist. I grabbed the knife, cutting Declan's ropes with shaking hands. "Can you stand?" I asked. "Barely." But he tried, using my shoulder for support. Vivian was on the floor, still screaming. Lily stood over her with the bat raised, looking shocked she had actually hit someone.

"Keep it steady!" I regained my footing between the bags, aimed, then took another two shots. One hit his upper arm, the other his shoulder, but he kept coming, unfazed by the gushing holes. I shifted my weight onto my other foot and grinned. I might not have stopped him, but the Thornblood dipped bullets had punctured him, binding shade and host to the same satisfying fate. I fired one last time, hitting him strait between his soulless eyes.
