He didn't look like a werewolf…he was a lycan? In a flash, he was across the room, grabbing Martin by the throat and lifting him off the ground like he weighed nothing. Martin choked, clawing at the hand crushing his windpipe. But Raphael didn’t stop. He threw Martin across the room, slamming him through the shattered glass window. The sound of breaking glass filled the air as Martin screamed, his body vanishing into the night and falling down the building and even though it was scary, it felt satisfying. Raphael turned to me then, his red eyes still glowing, his chest heaving with rage. For one terrifying second, I thought he was still lost in the fury.

I loved him more than my own life. But my devotion only seemed to enrage him. Ryan crouched down and grabbed me by the hair. He yanked hard, ripping a whimper from me as he forced me to look straight into his eyes. I bit my lip, tears clouding my vision. A sinister smile spread across his face as he stood back up. “I, Ryan Walter, Alpha of Shadowfang Pack, reject you, Elena Patrick, as my mate,” he declared. The words carved a hole through my chest before he even concluded, “You are not worthy of being my Luna.”

"What shadows?" His eyes closed briefly, lashes dark against skin pale and fevered. The gesture should have made him look human, fragile. Are they people? Humans like me?" I asked already having reached the conclusion of the difference between him and me.

The burning in my skin, the ache in my muscles, the emptiness in my chest, the memory of the dead girls—all of it was enough to keep me painfully aware of just how far from safety we were. As I lay there on the riverbank, trying to recover, I felt a presence. My heart stilled, and I looked up to see him—Raphael, the Wolf King, standing on the ridge above us. His gaze locked onto mine, and for a moment, the world seemed to stop. The intensity in his eyes sent a shiver down my spine, and despite everything, despite the pain and exhaustion, I couldn’t tear my gaze away from him. Something flickered in his expression—something I couldn’t quite place. Concern? Anger? Did I do something wrong?

Cat also returned polite words, but did not feel particularly comfortable around the strangers. She also wondered what she was doing here.
