The shadow screamed as the light struck it, but it didn’t retreat. “You can’t fight it alone!” Eli shouted, rushing to her side. “I’m not alone,” Lyla said, her voice strong. The pack joined her, their combined energy bolstering the light. The shadow screamed again, its form weakening as the light grew brighter. Lyla felt the forest’s energy surging through her, stronger than ever. She focused all of it into a single burst of light, aiming it directly at the shadow’s core. The shadow let out one final, deafening scream before it dissolved into nothingness. The tree shuddered, its blackened bark cracking and crumbling away to reveal vibrant, glowing wood beneath.

The woman staring back at me was pale and exhausted, but her eyes burned with a quiet determination. Slowly, I moved closer, finger trailing the cold glass. And then I saw it — a flicker, subtle but unmistakable. A shadow moving just behind my reflection, a shape that didn’t belong. My heart skipped. ---

Wilbur struggled with all his might and every move he made only produced more shadows. The new shadows would grab at his body once more, and there were a dozen pairs of jet-black hands within a matter of seconds. They grabbed Wilbur firmly with what seemed like unparalleled strength, trying to drag him into the darkness. Wilbur chanted and cast the Illuminos spell, sending a ball of light above his head. It lit up the dark path at once, and the shadows seemed to shrink back into the wall and ground, trying to stay away from the light. Wilbur's chest heaved as he sat up from the ground, and Stefan's voice rang in his head once more, "You're clever, but this is just the start."

Fuck, I suppose that we could’ve let them finger paint with his blood,’ I mused. One thing that I loved about the shadows was that they could multitask. While some were throwing psychotic vamps across the room, others were taking the additional protective vials that I had on me and throwing them against the ground at their feet. It created a shield to protect them. Everyone else only had two of them, but I had about thirty of them in my bag because the shadows could distribute them where they needed to go.

This time, I manage to get my fingers on the cheap plastic switch before I get hit again. I’m ready for it though. I throw up an arm, batting the thing away from me before it can fully slam into me. It’s a shadow—a fourth shadow—and it skitters across the bed then disappears on the other side of the mattress. I take advantage of its distraction and slam the light on with a little more force than necessary. The lamp illuminates the room, such as it is, casting dull amber light into all the corners. It’s the first time I’ve seen the shadows in the light, and the effect is even more eerie because my brain knows they should vanish—but they don’t.

Sounds got higher when they were out and she squeezed her eyes shut to prevent herself from seeing the huge crowd. When the sounds started to fade, it was only then when she sighed out in relief.
