“By strange men. Men who kept asking for the she wolf. I think… I know they were looking for me.” That got their attention. “I think I’m the she wolf,” I continued. “I feel connected to this prophecy, this book. It hums with energy when I touch it. It sounds insane, I know but everything inside me says it’s true.” I looked at each of them. My voice was shaking now, my heart racing. “Please tell me you believe me.” “I believe you,” Aiden said first, his voice calm. His loyalty warmed me, even now. Isaac hesitated, then nodded. “It’s crazy. But I’m with you.”

My sex clenches, and I press my thighs together, heat blooming in places I shouldn’t be thinking about this early in the day. Then I notice something else. At the foot of the bed, beside the dress, sits the book I took from the library but forgot to read. The Herd King. Its leather cover is worn smooth from age, but its presence is undeniable. Someone retrieved it. They want me to read it. I sit on the edge of the bed and pull it into my lap. My fingers trace the title carved into the leather. I feel like I’m holding something sacred. Like opening this book will do more than reveal stories.

I clicked my tongue and flipped through the book I was holding. I was about to close it when it stopped at a page where a lone white sheep was in the middle of a sea of hungry wolves. “When darkness meets light.”I read the caption and at first, it didn't make sense to me, until I noticed one wolf looking at the sheep in a strange way. Like he wanted to cherish her and not eat her. “The other wolves wanted to eat the sheep, but he was the darkness that met the light of hope.” I was deeply touched by the story and how they depicted it.

“So that way.” 16B was a much larger section than I expected. Still, it made sense since wolves were always passing down stories to the younger generations, true or not. “Found it,” I said. It took forty-five minutes but I found a book on the Moon Blessed that was not a kid's bedtime story. “When the Goddess becomes a man,” I read out the title. From the cover, I could tell it was still a fiction story for the most part. But it was better than nothing at all.

The words on the page seemed strange, almost esoteric, as if they belonged to some ancient society.
