Alethea I hear the unmistakable sound of Xavier's voice as he questions the doctor about Asher's condition. Dr. Josh sticks to our plan, repeating exactly what we agreed on. I hold my breath, counting on Asher to recover, because if he doesn't, we're all in serious trouble. Then, Xavier inhales sharply. "I smell something familiar," he murmurs, sniffing the air. My heart slams against my ribs. No. No. He can't sense me.

I folded my lips try not to laugh out. Despite not reading the room she withdrew her hand and continued, "You're Xavier Hunter from LA right?" Los Angeles huh. He looked up from his phone, brows slightly forward. "As if you haven't already caught on, news travels fast around here," she says a little too jumpy with her emotions. I hear Brits sigh and start clicking her tongue beside me. "I know right," I say to her. He hummed but not once did he take his eyes off his phones to look at her.

"I can imagine that in this day and age, you're not too familiar with our customs and traditions; probably not even with mates, am I correct?" I nodded. "Here are some books I think you could benefit from," Xavier said, pulling three from the shelf. "If you have any questions let me know, I'll go get you some tea while you read." I thanked him as he handed the stack of books to me. I found a sofa in the next room over and began to look through the several-hundred page books I'd been given. One was entirely dedicated to mates. I opened that one first.

I filed that thought carefully and turned toward the kitchen to refill my mug. Xander was already there. Dark trousers, white shirt open at the collar, hair not yet perfectly styled. He looked almost approachable like this, before the armor went on. He was reading something on his phone, leaning against the counter with the focused stillness of a man accustomed to processing difficult information without reacting to it. He looked up when he heard me. "You're up early," he said. "You're one to talk." He set his phone face down on the counter. Deliberate. Which meant whatever he'd been reading was something he wasn't ready to share yet.
