So, I found it highly unlikely that Duke Kestrel would be a shifter or that he would wed a shifter—Lady Lucia didn’t strike me as something supernatural. The shifter gene is unlike those who wield magic; it can’t skip a generation or two. One of Xander’s parents had to be a shifter, and that was just plain poppycock. I closed the book annoyingly and stared at it. It was getting me nowhere. Plus, I didn’t care what Xander was; I just wanted to know what was wrong with me!

" I choke on a breath at his proximity, pulling away slightly. I tilt my head, wondering exactly what I want to know. What I need to know. Might as well start with the basics. "What is this white stuff?" I inquire, my voice still shaking with fear of the monster. "It's called a Shifter," Wes says, the words flowing like melted butter from his lips, "and they're the sworn enemies of werewolves. They are creatures of chaos, death and misery, with eyes that reflect true hell. Invisible to the human and werewolf eye, the only way to detect a Shifter in its true form is to smell it. We are the only species with a strong enough sense of smell.

"I know you're just too busy. Oh well. My future brother-in-law is going for his college entrance exam, so I don't want to fight over a pen with him. "I think it sounds fine for him to get a pen before I do." Even at such a time, Elijah was still making fun of Liesel. He held her hand before continuing, "Once Xavier finishes his college entrance exam, I'll give him a watch. I feel Shifter Corporation's watches aren't too bad." Shifter Corporation also sold luxury goods, including watches. Since Elijah considered Shifter Corporation's models, Liesel wasn't about to object to his decision. "I'll ask someone to send the latest watches to your condominium. You should choose one too."

"But, if I have to talk to you, then you're gonna have to answer a few of my questions as well." "Well aren't you an opportunist? Trying to turn an interrogation back on the interrogator...?" The Shifter smiled softly, a move that not only emphasized his incredible mouth....but the four slightly sharp teeth, two on each side of his front teeth. Pointy canines that no mortal would ever sport. The sight of them shocked him as much as the Shifters smile tried to charm him. "Fine, let's do this. A limit of ten questions for each of us.....I believe that sounds fair enough?"

We ‘pivot’—” Alban spits the word, “so well because we don’t carry dead weight.” Mrs. Shah’s jaw drops, but she quickly covers her distaste with a bland expression. Brody mumbles his agreement, his mouth full.

I pushed my face into Xander’s fur and cried silently. I couldn’t put into words what I was feeling. I felt like I had let Xander down. I heard the popping and snapping sounds coming from within him and moved away to give him space to turn. The noises sent shivers all over my body. I couldn’t imagine the pain shifters went through just to switch from one form to another. Once it was done, Xander sat behind me and circled his arms around my own, holding me tight. I pressed the back of my head on his chest and took a deep, jerky breath.

The creature lost its balance but held firmly onto the rearview mirror and leaped, landing on the roof of the car with a thud that echoed through the metal. The roof caved in slightly, and in seconds, the shapeshifter’s claws began to pierce the metal, leaving deep, threatening marks. “Josh, the gun! It’s under the seat!” Xavier yelled, his voice laced with adrenaline. Josh quickly grabbed the gun, but before he could fire, the shapeshifter sank its claws into Josh’s hand, eliciting a scream of pain from him.

I raise an eyebrow. “We’re meant to be working, that does not seem like it would result in good work focus.” I object. Bellamy just pulls me down and settles me onto his lap. “Sure it will, I’m way more relaxed and focussed when I know exactly where you are.
