I rock back and forth in the chair, testing the rope to see how strong it might be. "The Shifters are more than the werewolves imagined. In fact, each one of them is a soul, both the corrupted and the pure gathered in this waiting room for their final destination. And I get to be their leader. The room was plain and bright—nothing special. It was large but there were no seats as if it was made to be used that way. Because of that, everyone was sitting on the ground in a lotus position while chatting with their colleagues and waiting to pass time. Right now, a woman who was noticeably secluded from everyone was busy on the left side of the room where the lights were dimmer.

Bianca said. “He said the waiting room was the worst design decision in the history of medicine.” Zoe looked up. “He wrote that making a sick child sit in a room with other sick children and call it waiting was the opposite of what recovery needed.” She looked at the screen. “He said recovery needed movement. Not physical movement. The sense that something was happening that mattered.” Ethan looked at Bianca across the table. She looked at her coffee. “He’s right,” she said. “That’s exactly right.”
