The wall slid shut behind them with a whisper, sealing them into darkness lit only by faint red emergency strips.
The safe room. It was a small room with narrow walls. It was designed for survival, not comfort. Their bodies collided softly as the space compressed around them. Lucien felt her breath hitch — not in fear, but in awareness. Her palms flattened against his chest, steadying herself, and for half a second, the world narrowed to the warmth of her touch and the thunder of his pulse beneath it.
“You’re shaking,” he murmured.
“No,” Evelyn said quietly. “I’m not.”
