When they were done, they moved to the next house without any words spoken. The sigil as it was seen was one that could be remembered. It was when we reached the third chapter of Rowena’s book that Cordelia’s knowledge came into play. The chapter on sigils and their unique brand of magic was one of the longest in the book. “Sigil’s tie into the other forms of magic since there’s a symbol for just about everything. There are ones to scare off enemies, capture memories and fool the human eye. There are a few witches, who after decades of practice, manage to create their own but it’s dangerous and tricky work.” Cordelia said as she entered the room, a small and unassuming book in her hand.

Something older, darker, had been triggered. He looked down again. The sigil was pulsing. Kaelion placed his palm near it, and the glow reacted, repulsing him with a blast of heat. Kaelion brushed her hair away from her face, cradling her as though sheer will could keep her alive. “Stay with me, little one. Come on.” Then, a light glowed beneath the blood. He flinched back as golden sigils carved themselves into her stomach, burning through her skin like fire branding flesh. An intricate spiral formed, ancient and forbidden, It was indeed the Sigil of Undoing.

My hand shook slightly; was it nerves or just the intensity of focus? Just as I finished copying down the last intricate detail, I spotted another comment in the forum thread that made my blood run cold. “Hey, make sure you don’t confuse this sigil with that one,” the user had written, posting a picture of another sigil that looked almost identical to the one used for trapping witches. “If you use this by mistake, you’ll actually enhance a witch’s power instead of taking it away. My name is Sigil and I’m a student of the academy, specifically in the combat department.” He talked with pride as getting into the combat department was usually a grueling experience. “Since you’re headed there let’s walk together, especially since we might reach the academy during the late evenings. It’s not advisable to roam around the academy at night anymore.” I quirked a brow, “What happens at night?”

Where did it go? “Most Luminaris children get marked on their right hands or left—if they’re left-handed like I am—when they’re still young. Is it what you’re searching for? The permanent Sigil that was drawn on my arm when I was young?” He turned the back of his left hand that I was still holding. It looked perfectly normal to me. “I saw something earlier and now, I don’t see anything. It keeps coming and going. What’s a Sigil?” I asked.

After a few moments of her carefully studying her, she took in a sharp breath. “She’s writing something!” She nearly shouted. “What do you mean?” Benji asked as both he and Cyrus joined us at the cell. “Look!” She pointed at Reigns feet. “The pattern she’s looping. It’s a sigil. An old one.” She now had the attention of us all. “I’ve read about it in study. It’s used during war to keep one from talking. Only a high ranking witch can cast it.” “Is there anything you can do to reverse it?” I asked.

“Then he finally accepts what you are becoming.” Zaria stiffened, but Mara didn’t wait for a reply. She gestured to the floor. “Come. Today, we begin.” ⸻ The ritual started with chalk. At least, that’s what Zaria thought—until Mara pressed a stick into her hand and she felt heat radiate from it, the faint vibration of something alive. Not chalk. Bone, burned down to ash, bound with blood. “Sigils are power,” Mara said. “Language older than speech. Every line a command. Every curve a binding. The difference between savior and destroyer is whether your hand wavers when you carve.”
