On the back, someone had written: “2:14 a.m. She finally stopped crying.” Zara touched the photograph. A strange warmth moved through her fingers. Then— a flash. A room. Rain hitting glass. A woman humming. A soft hand against her cheek. “Easy, little one.” Zara gasped and stumbled backward. Adrian caught her. “What happened?” “I saw something.” “What?” “A room.” Her breathing became uneven. “There was rain. And someone was holding me.” Isabella closed her eyes.

Bleeding. SILENCE

“The grey avoids his space. It leaves a circle of dry, colored ground.” We followed her to the green. It was true. Around the stone wolf, in a perfect radius of about ten feet, the grass was still green, the earth dark and rich. The monotonous downpour parted around the space as if repelled. Inside the circle, the world was still specific. Karn’s absolute, petrified silence was creating a pocket of resistance against the rain of blandness. “His silence is so complete, so intentional, it has integrity,” Kairi murmured, awe in his voice. “The grey rain is noise without meaning. His silence is meaning made manifest. They cancel each other out.”

Without her realizing it, her long-buried grievances seemed to be easing away. Her eyes turned watery. Nissa stared at his broad back. How many times did she silently weep over this very back as he walked away from her without a second thought? He was once a figure out of reach, aloof and untouchable. But now, here he was, kneeling before her. She let out a silent, fleeting laugh. Life was full of irony. When Benjamin did not hear any movement for a while, he turned back and looked up at her. Her face was unreadably calm, like someone watching a dull movie with no emotional investment.

When I regained consciousness, I saw my mother crying. Their friends watched the exchange, feeling sad as they realized the hurt each of them was causing one another. They made their way to the waterfall in silence, creating an awkward atmosphere. The waterfall was a stunning aquarium blue, blending shades of Atlantis and Mediterranean blue. It drizzled onto the rocks below, while a stream burbled along its bed, bubbling over rocks and branches. At the bottom, a swirling vortex formed, and foam collected from the friction of the water, making the area look like paradise. The rest of the pool was crystal clear, allowing them to see the rocky bottom beneath the surface.
