“That’s always your answer. Nothing. Don’t ask. Don’t look. Don’t care. Don’t come close. Pero you keep saying things that sound like you’re daring people to notice.”
He stood too. “You don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Then explain!”
“I don’t owe you an explanation!”
“I know!” My voice cracked, and I hated it. “I know you don’t. Pero I’m scared, okay?”
Caelan froze.
The words were already out.
Too honest.
Too much.
But I couldn’t pull them back anymore.
“I’m scared,” I repeated, quieter. “Because sometimes you say things like that and I don’t know if I’m supposed to ignore them or take them seriously. And if I ignore them, what if I’m wrong?”
