Sierra smiled weakly, trying to summon the easy, innocent answers her mother would expect. “I… I spend time here, mostly. With family.”
“And who keeps you company most?” the man asked, sipping his wine.
The room waited.
“Mostly with D……” Sierra froze. The word hung on her tongue, deadly. She caught herself, choking on air. “With… Dad and Mom.”
The table chuckled at her stumble, unconcerned. Glasses clinked, conversation rolled on.
