We had a few weeks to empty everything out, but they would reorganize the inventory to make room in a few days. Grampa gave me a look over his reading glasses. “We can rent a small storage unit, but I don’t want to replace the money we’re saving with a new expense. We need to scale to about forty percent of the space we’re using to make room for your coffee shop idea.” I nibbled on my lip, hating that he was right. The second floor was primarily dedicated to historical, nonfiction, and rare books. I’d handpicked many of them, hoping they would find a home with the right people, but all they did was take up space. They hadn’t earned us any money or popularity.

I don’t try touching it again. Closing the box, I approach the shelves. I take out the book closest to me. Brushing off the dust, I realize it’s a strategy book, written in delicate penmanship. The paper is fragile, but the tome is bound with great care. The other side of the shelf seems to have hard-bound journals. It’s like an entire couple’s life secured in one small room. I hear a scraping sound, and I turn my head to see Robert picking up a stack of small portraits from one of the iron boxes in the corner.

The walk to the bookstore was shorter than she expected. Nestled between two larger buildings, its faded sign read "Willow’s Nook.” A small bell chimed as they stepped inside, and the scent of old paper and polished wood greeted them. The librarian was a small lady with a bob cut and cat eyed glasses, probably in her fifties. The space was cozy, with narrow aisles lined with overflowing shelves and dim lamps casting a warm glow. It felt like stepping into another world, one untouched by time.

She stayed holed up in her room, slowly packing what she could take with her. Her clothes did not take up much space. The real issue was her entire wall of specialized medical books.
