The corner of the paper had a doodle—a red, flushed emoji with its tongue out and a stupid grin. “Bastard,” Iden muttered under his breath. But a faint twitch of his lips betrayed him. For a moment, just a fleeting moment, he smiled.

But today, her body simply wasn’t up to it. At that moment, a soft rustling caught her attention. Luna appeared at her bedside, her silky fur shimmering as she moved gracefully. With her tail wagging gently, Luna nuzzled Aria’s hand as if trying to impart her vitality to her friend. Maybe Hank sent the vet over to check on me. “Maybe you could pretend to be sick and help a girl out,” I say, looking down at Sadie who just wags her tail and runs to the door, giving an excited bark that has me laughing and opening the door. The third was my favorite – Gas in full play mode, running through the garden with a new rope toy, pure happiness radiating from every inch of him. "You're a natural model," I told him, posting the best shots to I*******m. Within minutes, the likes started rolling in. Scarlett was first: "OMG YOU GOT A DOG?! 😱 Why am I just finding out about this?! Also he's adorable 😍"

He opened his mouth eagerly, and I tore off a piece of duck in disgust and threw it over. He got it right, chewed it in his mouth like a big Wolf dog. Especially the way he was now half crouching in front of me, I even had an urge to touch his hair, maybe he really would suddenly grow a tail behind him, wagging happily. I let out an unrestrained snort. He smiled back. "You smiled." "So what?" "You have a beautiful smile," he said. "You should smile more, not frown all the time."

Nothing. He cocked his head to one side as he watched me, an amused smile playing on his lips. In his arms was Sammy, his samoyed breed. He was stroking the dog now, slow and gentle but firm. Just the way he caressed me. Slow and gentle—firm. My stomach flipped as he watched me. There was something in his eyes that always affected me in the oddest way. Now, like always, I felt lightheaded and just that little bit breathless.

I say, “Although I am good looking, but no, I don’t have a girlfriend.” Jamie chuckles, “But that was a girl’s hair on your shoulder. Do you go to places like pubs or drinking bars a lot?” I snort, “No. The hair you saw was the dog.” “Dog?” I nod, “Yes, it’s my dog, Sunny. She’s a golden retriever.” Hah! Golden retriever. Henrietta is a golden retriever now, huh? As Jamie hears me, his eyes turn brighter, “Her hair is this long?”

Noelle had a twinkle in her eye that brought a smile to his face. “You wouldn’t happen to be talking about one Doris Snow, would you?” he asked just as Pooch bounded up into the air and did a little skippy, jump thing that made him laugh. He loved to see how happy the little dog was. It hurt his heart to know he’d be back in a kennel soon and would have to stay there for most of the day.
