Pursuing My Rejected Luna
My chest aches with all the things I want to say: that he’s safe, that I’ll never abandon him, that blood doesn’t make a family, love does.
But words feel too fragile. I cross the room, grabbing one of Gabby’s many stuffed animals from the basket. This one is a bear with black fur and golden eyes. I offer it to Nico with a smile. He takes it slowly, holding it close to his chest. I reach out, brushing a strand of hair from his face. He flinches at first, then goes still.
“You can keep that bear,” I say softly. “And soon, I will take you shopping so you can get as many toys as you want.”
