The weight in the air stole the words right out of their lungs. Then—crackling. Soft at first. Then growing. A low, eerie hum that crawled across the back of her neck. It was fire. And it was light. And it was alive. They turned. And everything else vanished. There, in the middle of the scorched battlefield, stood two figures so blindingly impossible that the world itself seemed to hold its breath. Two wolves. But not like anything they’d ever seen—not even in dreams. The first—massive, towering, wrapped in fire so pure it bled gold. Nova's breath caught. But then—black smoke spilled in like ink poured into water. It slithered between them, hissing and alive, growing thicker by the second. The golden eyes disappeared behind it. "No...Jax!" she screamed, panicked, like she couldn't breathe. She ran forward, but the smoke slammed into her like a wave. Blinding. Freezing. Drowning.

Jax pushed me behind him, four lines blazing again, trying to shield, but Old Oak branch on trailer pulsed, black smoke sinking thicker, pooling across lake now, moving across ice toward us like fog that drinks light. White wolves around us howled, not war howl now, pain howl, as black smoke touched their paws and light dimmed more. Runa shouted, “Run! Everyone off lake! To village! Now!” White wolves started running, huge white bodies slipping on ice, toward village cabins, away from black smoke that sank and drank. Jax grabbed my hand, pulled me, we jumped off truck bed onto ice and ran, his hand warm around my burned healing palms, four lines glowing trying to make shield around us both.

The smoke filled her lungs. “Elaina!” a voice called in her mind—not through the flames, but inside her head. She stumbled backward, coughing. Her eyes burned. I’m going to die, she thought. Here. Like this. Then— A low growl echoed through the blaze. From the corner of the room, a brilliant white wolf emerged through the fire, its golden eyes glowing with fury and panic. The flames didn’t touch him. They moved around him, as if repelled by his presence.
