I don’t need to be reminded. My paws falter as I look off to the side and see smoke rising in the far distance. I slow as I try to see, but being so far away, I can’t tell anything except this fire is massive. The sky is turning hazy from the smoke and the air holds the scent, but as I stop and sniff, there’s a weird smell mixed with what is a normal smell of smoke. I can’t decipher it. ‘Whatever that smell is, I don’t like it, it’s not natural,’ my wolf sends to me.

An abrupt exclamation slipped from my lips when I spotted the wolves. However, these were not any ordinary wolves with soft white, grey, or black fur like snow. "They're made out of smoke?" I shivered. Their eyes were yellow, filled with rage and menace. The paws that should have been digging into the dirt were invisible as they seemed to hover in the air, carried by the dark smoke of the malevolent Zeth. "The bringer of fear," Serena murmured, her hand beginning to form a defense against the gloom these wolves, summoned by their master, brought with them.

The weight in the air stole the words right out of their lungs. Then—crackling. Soft at first. Then growing. A low, eerie hum that crawled across the back of her neck. It was fire. And it was light. And it was alive. They turned. And everything else vanished. There, in the middle of the scorched battlefield, stood two figures so blindingly impossible that the world itself seemed to hold its breath. Two wolves. The black wolf stopped, cocked its head to the side with a look in its eyes as if staring at something cute. Grace growled again, this time, the sound more menacing and the wolf growled right back.

I needed— A scream tore through the air. Not far. I jerked upright. Then another scream—followed by a sharp, strangled gurgle. I ran. My feet pounded the dirt path between the the building. Wolves poured out of rooms, drawn by the noise. Smoke. My heart leapt into my throat. The southern guard post—flames licked up the wooden wall, black smoke curling into the orange sky. Then I saw the bodies. And the masked wolves. Not ours.

The smoke filled her lungs. “Elaina!” a voice called in her mind—not through the flames, but inside her head. She stumbled backward, coughing. Her eyes burned. I’m going to die, she thought. Here. Like this. Then— A low growl echoed through the blaze. From the corner of the room, a brilliant white wolf emerged through the fire, its golden eyes glowing with fury and panic. The flames didn’t touch him. They moved around him, as if repelled by his presence.

One of the guards bent, frowning. “What’s that?” he called. The answer came fast, a hiss, then a puff. Black smoke spilled out and hit the air like a wave.
