I dove to the side, splashing into the deeper part of the pool just as the snake’s head slammed into the stone where I had been sitting as the rock shattered like glass.
Finally Calhoun’s eyes snapped open. He didn't ask questions. He saw the monster, saw me trembling in the water, and his instincts took over.
"Get out of the water, Jinx! Run to the back!" he roared.
He tried to shift, but his body groaned in protest. His bones cracked, but the fur didn't sprout. He was too drained and with a snarl of pure frustration, he grabbed a heavy, jagged rock and stood his ground in the center of the spring.
