Emerson POV The words sliced through the murmurs around me. They weren’t the worst ones. “Don’t look at her,” someone whispered urgently, too close to my ear. “Snake-eyes bring bad luck.” Another voice followed, lower, fearful. “That’s why the Alpha hates her. You don’t stare at things like that and survive.” My stomach twisted. Several pack members turned, their glares sharpening. Some looked away quickly, like my eyes might infect them if they lingered too long. One of them bared his fangs and lunged forward, his steps heavy and deliberate.

Sleep eluded me that night. Every time I closed my eyes, his face materialized: those storm-gray eyes, that cruel, beautiful mouth. The way he had looked at me, as if I were something he yearned to shatter, or devour. I struck the thin mattress beneath me. "Stop it," I hissed, my voice a ragged whisper. "He called you a half-blood like it was a disease. He's not your enemy. He's not anything."

Soon after, Queen Suna's personal maids came into her room, bathed her gently and respectfully dressed her up in her night rope. Making sure she was alone, Suna walked towards the bookshelf by the side of her room. With eyes glued on books neatly arranged, her eyes fell on a book with a brown leather cover. Carefully she held the spell book and her eyes glittered in satisfaction. She walked towards her mirror, looked at her reflection and back to the book. With long pointed and piercing nails, she flipped through the pages of the book and her eyes rested on a page filled with spell words.

I hope that our little run-in didn’t run Sapphire off. Besides class, my gem has more or less avoided me. Karli has tried talking to me a few times since, but that should stop now. I ripped into her yesterday. I even made her cry, which I don’t feel bad about. She had it coming. If it weren’t for our class, I don’t think I would even see Sapphire. I smirk when I walk into the library. I see a head of blue hair hiding in one of the corners. I nod at a few people I know studying here as I approach her. The entire area in front of her is covered in books and papers. I pull the chair beside her, ensuring the feet scrape against the floor. Her face jerks up as our eyes meet.

"I have a theory." Draco said as he flipped the pages of the old book. It was called the book of supernaturals. A small leather bound book that had information on every recorded supernatural. Gabriel had called Draco the minute he left Elliot who had been thoroughly confused by his request. Draco had come over quickly and Gabriel ushered him into his study and locked the door behind them. It was still early, too early for Lori to wake up so he knew they had a few more minutes to themselves before she woke up.

Then, to the right, and at the end of a long row of books, one book jutted out from the shelf. I pulled it out. It didn’t have a name. It was a leather-bound volume, and its cover had a skeletal hand clutching a wilting rose. I opened the book, skimming through the pages. My stomach turned at some of the rituals inside. Selene was too arrogant, too vein, to resort to grave robbing, and there would be no need to stitch me together if her plan was to take over people’s bodies as she had before. The Binding.

“So what about magical creatures are we learning about today?” She grins at me before dropping a heavy book down in front of me, “History of magic creatures!” I put my face in my hands and groan, Drago chuckles from where he’s found a comfortable spot to watch us, a book in his hand. I raise my eyebrow at him, “Harry Potter?” He gives me a sheepish smile, “Don’t spoil it, I’m only on the Prisoner of Askaban.” I laugh and turn back to Serena. “Alright we’re here so let's begin.”

A month later, he was selected for an apprenticeship at Karnam, the largest and most prestigious wizarding academy in Velas. The boys were housed in an auxiliary building, sharing rooms with other workers. The chief foreman was an old elf who appreciated hard work and had no favourites. He rotated the boys at various jobs where they were graded and then assigned to appropriate assignments. Nio was lucky. Most of the boys could not read or write so education gave him an advantage and after grading he was placed in the main library as a junior assistant.
