“We can’t go any further,” Marcus announced, killing the engine as we pulled up a mile from the base of the mountain.
Even with the heater running, the cold seeped in, biting at my skin. If I’d still been human, I’d probably be freezing to death by now. Instead, I reached for my bag, flung it over my shoulder, and stepped out into the crispy air.
The sun had climbed high, casting a golden glow over the landscape. Snow blanketed everything—thick, untouched, beautiful in its stillness. The pine trees stood like sentinels, their branches dusted with white, and the sky was a piercing shade of blue.
