If I had to sleep outdoors, I might as well do it in the comfort of my own fur coat. Seven months after the rejection fiasco, I found myself in a dingy little tavern near the border. The proprietor of the place was a bold, outspoken old woman named Poppy Pitts. She was short and busty, with a mop of curly white hair on her head, and a round, earnest face. I liked her so much that I had to tell her up front that hiring me could bring trouble from the Alpha’s son.

“You want anything here, just help yourself. Feel at home. We want you to be comfortable here, don’t we, Max?” Max sighed, eyes heavy as they met mine. “Yes, yes.” He tipped his head towards Soren. “He’s a free spirit, man. He is wearing a face mask so I couldn’t see his face. Who is this?

When I opened the curtains, the sunlight outside was blinding. I made simple coffee and toast, then sat at the little table by the window and ate slowly. My phone was quiet, and even the work group was peaceful. In the afternoon, I changed into workout clothes and prepared to go downstairs for a jog in the park. The moment I pushed open the glass door downstairs, someone blocked my path. It was Simon again. This time, he was alone. He was still wearing yesterday's shirt. It was badly wrinkled. There were heavy dark circles under his eyes, and stubble had grown along his jaw.

Then, I turned around to face them and calmly said, "I've finished the persimmons. That means I can leave now, right?" A complex look appeared in everyone's eyes at once. They never expected that someone who had once been so docile and obedient would suddenly become so stubborn and determined this time. Mom then fell to the ground with a loud wail and began to sob.

Cyrus stepped through the door cautiously as if waiting for me to tell him to leave but I said nothing as he came in, observing the small confines of my apartment.
