The shadows twist around my hands, pulling at the ground beneath me, creating a shield of darkness in front of me. I don’t know how I’m doing it. I don’t know how I’m controlling the shadows at all. But it feels right. The rogue lunges, and I thrust my hands forward. The shadows lash out, slamming into the wolf with the force of a hundred storms. It crashes to the ground, howling in pain. But I won't stop. I can’t stop. The shadows surge forward, wrapping around the rogue, pulling it down. Men sat in booths with their cigars and their secrets, watching us like they owned the place. And in the back, I saw her. Not like the others. She wasn’t drinking, wasn’t leaning back with her arm stretched across the booth. She was stiff, controlled, almost… out of place. I couldn't even smell her scent so I couldn't follow her. That night I couldn't get her off my mind, sleep was not an option. I need to find out who she is and why I am having a hard time detecting what she is. My wolf said she is a werewolf but I can't smell her wolf on her at all. Shadow thinks that she has no clue what she is. He also thinks that she was never part of a pack as we can't detect any pack scent on her either. Witch I guess would have made scents on why she has no wolf yet if she has never been around our kind she would develop at a much slower pace than the rest of us.

That was when something wholly unexpected happened. She was reaching for the were's chains again when she saw the darkness around her hands begin to grow . . . deeper. Yes, "deeper" was the only thing that made sense. Shamira could see in any darkness, except that blackness which now encircled her hands resisted even her vision. Total darkness, cold and hard. The other two shadows seemed to have learnt from the mistake of the first and stopped meters away, hitting the shield at different angles from a distance and their magic slowly eating through mine like fire burning a paper even as I strengthened it again and again. “Toke, how did you—” somebody beside me began. “Listen to me.
