Until now. Shifting into drive, I hit the gas a little harder than intended. Gravel tumbles underneath the tires, keeping me from moving for a second before the Volvo takes off. I manage to turn around, easing up on the gas and finally hitting pavement to pass the cemetery gates. It's still pitch black outside but I'm beyond positive it shouldn't be. I've been gone for hours. This is insane. Nothing makes sense. The Watchman. My dead brother-at least I think it's him-back from the dead.

I walked through, ignoring the broken frames, the crumbling plaster, the ghosts of who we were. Straight to the back. Toward what used to be a garden. I hadn’t been here since that night. The night I killed her. The night I buried London. The garden was gone. Weeds had taken over the soil. The trellises were broken, and the fountain was dry, cracked open like a corpse left to decay. But I knew the spot. Muscle memory guided me there. And what I saw stopped me cold. The grave— London’s grave—had been dug up.

I wondered. Fresh red soil mounded unevenly along the rim. Nearby rested the gravedigger’s tools, his hoe, then the shovel, left behind like a pause mid-task. I jerked back until my foot tripped over a small gravestone. “For me?! What do you mean?!”

Just walked right past him, pulling Kael with me, head high, shoulders back, heart racing but feet steady as stone. They thought they killed me. Threw me out to die. I came back to walk over their graves and I brought the whole damn pack with me.

I tried to make light of the situation. I looked down to the ground, at the flowers that weren't mine. I thought back to the woman that visited his grave weekly, they were probably hers. The more I surveyed the area, the more it didn't align with my memory. The soil looked like it'd been undisturbed but there was something off. The ground didn't lay flat, and it was, I would know after all. I made sure everything went right with the ceremony. As I squinted my eyes in thought, rethinking my good memory and doubting myself, that was when I saw it. A discarded shovel not even seven feet away.

"Alex, wake up! You haven’t had a chance to tell me anything yet!" A light drizzle began to fall on the red grave strewn with rose petals. The intense scent of wet earth mingled with my sobs as I knelt, weak, in front of the damp, black-painted wooden headstone. My heart felt shattered, and the pain was unbearable. The man who had once filled my days was gone forever, and the tangled threads of our secrets would never be fully unraveled.

Half-buried in weeds. I turned, walked back to the car, and popped the trunk. A sledgehammer sat inside. Gift from a renovation company. Ribbon still tied on. Bright. Almost a joke. I grabbed it, walked back, and stopped in front of the headstone. Taking a breath, I tightened my grip around the cold metal. Then I swung. All in. Smashed it down. Crash. The sound ripped through the empty grounds. Bang. Again. And again. Until it was nothing but broken rubble.

The closer I got, the quieter everything felt like the night itself was holding its breath. I slipped past the outer guards easily and no one questioned me. I took the long way back not to avoid anyone but because I wanted to pay a special someone a visit. I stopped in front of Isobel’s grave, the woman who thought she could control everything even me. I stopped in front of it, the freshly turned earth was still dark beneath the moonlight. For a moment i just stared at the grave and the I laughed. “You really thought you were untouchable,” I murmured.

A few minutes later, they were done, and they both walked back into the cabin. I sighed in relief when I was left alone again. I walked toward the grave, only to find the place was littered with graves. I froze, and tears flooded my eyes. I immediately began heading towards the gala hurriedly, while looking back at intervals. I don't want to end up in one of those graves. I was halfway out of the woods when I bumped into something and fell on my buttocks.

I pushed the door but it wasn't opening. I know that mother isn't the type to leave her privacy for others to prey on. I left the door and walked towards my room, I unlocked the door and walked inside. I dropped my phone on the nightstand drawer and put my backpack on the bed before walking inside the bathroom. Oh, my head hurts. ***** I got out of my car and walked towards the grave. I kneel down before the grave and wipe away the dust on the name. Gray Julius Hampton. 1986_ 2015
