It started small, like a spark, then grew, filling every nerve, every fibre of her being. “Go! Go now, Clara!” her grandmother urged, her eyes glistening with tears and pride. Before Clara could question it, the warmth exploded outward. Time itself seemed to shiver. The firelight warped and stretched, the screams became distant echoes, and the ground beneath her feet disappeared. One moment, she was on scorched earth. The next, she was falling. The world around her blurred, colours and shapes twisting in impossible ways. She felt weightless, suspended between moments, suspended between worlds. Then, as suddenly, as it began, it ended.

She would be sharp, concentrated, a thing of purpose in a field of ruin. Her throat compressed until the world narrowed to a single, ruined taste. The wolf’s breath steamed across her face. Its amber eyes burned as close as coals. Sophie braced, ready to meet whatever came next. Above them, the sky was a smear of smoke and helicopter lights. Below, the Wolf King’s roar thundered like the end of the world. And then her world went dark around the edges, and the death grip tightened.

At the length, she reached library which was pooled with different books of different genres. But nothing excited Sophia, she did read some books in the past, but now from last two years she had indulged herself in work to the extent where she no more felt interested. She walked by shelves feeling every book with her finger tips. To her surprise, the books were without a particle of dirt and books didn’t seemed new but worn out. “He didn’t seem to be someone who loves reading.” Sophia spoke to herself looking at the piles of volume. Traveling the way she reached to the fiction section, whose pages were most worn out.

Sophie felt lost, with no one and nothing to guide her, not even the Lord whom she had grown increasingly distant from in the past few months. Everything around her seemed to echo paganism in a world filled with sinners, rapists, and killers. It made her question constantly if this was a punishment for her sins. But what were her sins compared to those of the heathens? Helen never got the chance to learn about what transpired between Sophie and Ivar, regardless of how many times she asked her to open up. The girl felt the need to have some control over her life, even if it meant being her own guide.

SOPHIA'S POV The sunlight streamed through the hospital window, casting a warm glow over the sterile room. It was a stark contrast to the tumultuous emotions churning inside Sophia. She stood by the window, her gaze fixed on the city awakening from its slumber, the bustling streets below a reminder of life moving forward. Yet, at this moment, time felt suspended. The events of the previous night replayed in her mind like a broken record, each scene etched with crystal clarity.

Just as she was about to look away, two glowing amber eyes stared back at her from the trees. Startled, Sophie gasped and stepped back. However, when she turned back to see what she was running from, the eyes were gone. She exhaled shakily. Okay, you’re officially losing it. Deciding she’d had had enough of the weird things for one evening, she climbed back into bed determined to go to sleep. The following morning she walked into town with her jacket fastened to protect against the cold. The bookshop was closed on Sundays, and she needed coffee—desperately.

"You told me to ‘read slowly.’ You said he vanished clean, like a victim." "A happy coincidence," Sophia said. "They needed someone who could stitch a story. I was the best candidate."
