A ripple ran through the air, and the villagers froze. Kaen lifted his head, growling. The flames flickered, casting long shadows that twisted unnaturally. The elder stumbled from her tent, pointing toward the horizon. “Look!” Selene turned—and her blood ran cold. Far away, above the southern mountains, a streak of pure darkness tore through the merged sky. It pulsed once, then spread like ink through water, devouring the stars. The child’s glow flickered violently. “It found us.” Selene stood, eyes narrowing. “No—it found me.”

I roared. ​We fought for our lives in the weightless dark, shoving the radioactive cores back into their lead caskets. Just as the last rod clicked into place, gravity returned with a vengeful thud. We slammed into the floor, the breath knocked out of us as the Sky-Whale let out a triumphant, guttural roar. ​I looked at the monitor. We had breached the outer wall of the Storm Seed. Outside, the world was a kaleidoscope of white clouds and black lightning. And in the center of the chaos, hanging like a broken chandelier in the sky, was the Southern Hub.

In a swift, decisive motion, he drove the dagger from his sleeve straight into his heart. As blood gushed forth, Eric swiftly wrapped his arms around me, shielding me from the horror. ... The glowing scrolls turned into a shower of violet-gold butterflies that flew toward the horizon. Silas and Lyra woke up on the balcony of the keep. The "User Profile" eye in the sky was gone. The "Reader’s Prompt" was gone. The world of the North was finally "Unread." They stood together, looking out over the mountains. The "Silver Peaks" were now the "Biological Peaks," glowing with a starlight that was their own. "We’re off the page," Silas whispered, his gold-and-sapphire skin glowing with a soft, steady radiance.

Cassandra felt like she was Frodo and his band of hobbits on their way to Mordor. The morning sun rose slowly over the mountains. The bright stars began to blend into the sun-lit sky. They crossed the hillsides and a running creek, which was a winding strip, bordered with leaning trees of blossoming rhododendrons. The clouds of lustrous purple-pink flowers on its hilly southern slopes could be seen from afar. In contrast to the human world, it was probably summer in the World Beyond or maybe it was spring. Cassandra couldn't tell. The strange place seemed to have the four seasons all at once.
