Every instinct screams at me to turn back to the safety of the bridge. The canopies of the remaining pods suddenly open, exposing my companions still in hibernation, utterly unaware of the impending danger. The monitors have either malfunctioned, or this is a safety device. I force myself not to panic as my breathing becomes labored from the lack of oxygen. I have almost reached Beth. She stares up at me, and I can see relief in her eyes. There is no time to consider the consequences. I rip out her tubes and remove the restraints. Globular clusters of blood and fluid float upward to the widening fracture and disappear. Beth stretches out a hand, “Skye, help me,” she whispers.

Sky appeared on my back and burnt the back of the cloth, but he didn’t burn me. “Great. Hope Asher has another suit,” I said, walking to the closet. I removed the suit and dumped it in a basket, then I freshen up. After taking my bath, I wore my nightwear and joined Sky on the bed. I tried so hard to stay awake because I wanted to know what happened on the north border, but I couldn’t because Sky was snuggling so close to me and his fur was making me sleepy, so I gave up and was off to the dreamland.

Almost whole. That evening, long after the others had settled in, Celeste found herself on Silas’s balcony. The sky was painted in shades of blue and lavender, stars peeking through the winter clouds. She leaned on the railing, arms folded, the fabric of her coat still smelling faintly of perfume and fresh wool. Silas joined her without a word, his presence like gravity. Wrapping himself around her. "Long day?" he asked softly. Celeste smiled. "Victoria tried on a veil that could have doubled as a tent."

“Did you find Bryce?” “Yes.” She brings the bottle of water to her mouth and greedily swallows half the water in one go. “Aaaaah,” she sighs. “So? Where is he?” She points over her shoulder. “Going South. He was almost at the border when I found him.” She looks at the sick sunrise. “I think that was a few hours ago though.” “Yeah. Does the sun always look like it’s dying?” “No. It’s usually golden and bright. Nothing like that. It looks like it’s trying to die.”
