The Phoenix Wolf's Awakening
"You're glowing."
I was. Dark fire flickered under my skin, visible through the aging lines. Several phoenixes turned our way, curious.
"She's recently awakened," Derek said smoothly to those watching. "Still learning control."
They nodded sympathy and turned away. Recent awakening was common here, trauma triggering dormant bloodlines. No one questioned it.
"Information first," Derek whispered, not releasing me. "Revenge later."
"Let me go."
"Not until you stop trying to commit public murder."
He was right. I hated that he was right. Slowly, painfully, I pulled the fire back inside. It fought me, wanting out, wanting blood, wanting to burn everything that hurt.
