He is not a person who lets anyone close enough to try. But his ribs are cracked and the bowl is hot and she is sitting there with a spoon and a face that will clearly wait him out indefinitely. He opens his mouth. She feeds him the first spoonful.

I shake my head. “Don’t worry, you’ll fit right in here,” Callan says. “Spoons are entirely optional.” With a smile, he drops his spoon and picks up his bowl, lifting it to his mouth to slurp from the edge. I’m instantly relieved that they know the logical way to eat, and I’m so hungry I don’t want to pick up one tiny bite at a time with the spoon instrument. I pick up my bowl and let the food pour into my mouth. I chew, slurp and devour the meat and bones and broth.

Although it wasn't as delicious as Eva's fresh and tender pudding, it was still a rare delicacy for someone who had been traveling for so long, so Selena couldn't help but eat a few more bites.

I can’t help but wonder if this is some sort of game. The next time she wakes me up, she sits my bed up and I sigh, feeling groggy. I see she is holding a bowl and a spoon, and she looks around, “Hurry, he would rather you just drink this, but you need to eat slower.” She says, spoon-feeding me.

Corinne brought some baby food for Joey. She told him to stop playing for a while and have dinner first. Joey was very obedient. He swiftly put down the toy and got off the bed to eat his dinner. Not thinking. Just moving through the motions like it was the only way to keep from shattering.
