He stares down at me, and I pause. The surprise is gone from his features. The anger too. He looks numb. Blank. Hollow.

While he was still in a daze, Stephen raised a hand and snapped his fingers. Adrian slowly opened his eyes, but his expression was vacant, like someone under a trance. “This stuff actually works?” Stellar looked at the scene in mild disbelief, as if she were watching something out of a fantasy film.

I straightened my back and squared my shoulders before I started heading for the club door. I stopped in my track when I got there and I saw someone familiar standing right outside the door. He stood there with a hard and yet blank expression on his face and he was staring straight ahead without shaking. I blinked at him and tried to clear my vision just in case I have started seeing things but when I opened my eyes again, he was still standing there in the same position.

For a fleeting second, my eyes changed, turning pitch black, devoid of any light or emotion. The expression staring back at me was not my own. It was stoic, unfeeling, and utterly inhuman.

It’s like we aren’t even breathing properly without her and our children. Kane was more distant than usual all his sharp mind dulled by something none of us could put words to. His jaw was locked tight, his stormy grey eyes colder than ever but he wasn’t looking at either of us. He watched as she struggled, her body convulsing, her breath becoming ragged, her cries for help fading into silence. He saw the life draining from her eyes, the light flickering and fading, replaced by a blank, unseeing stare.

“—a fucking muzzle.” I’m physically holding myself back from expelling the contents of my stomach, grinding my teeth until the roaring in my head is silenced. “Tell me what’s happening. What is she doing?” “She’s just staring at the wall…at nothing. There’s no light in her eyes. They’re just blank. How is she going to survive this?” She whispers, only to startle half a second later. “Someone’s coming. I can hear her cell door unlock. It’s some doctor looking person. I’m going to follow them.”

It was not a display of anger. At this millisecond, his face resembled a monument carved of ancient, dead stone. There was no theatrical rage, no shattering of furniture, no loss of composure. He simply stared down at the parameters of the text, his deep grey eyes completely clear and devoid of mist. He was too quiet.
