Miller turned on all the lights when they entered and opened the windows. The office smelled of mild antiseptic and chemicals mixed with the smell of old mouldy books. There was a bookshelf by one side of his table and a shelf full of awards on the other side. A large wooden table sat in the muffle of the room with one seat on one side of it and two seats on the other side. Dr. Miller sat down before the table and ushered Emily and Mr. Cornwell to join him. He did not speak immediately. Instead, he grabbed a folder on his table and wrote something down on it.

The transition into the library felt like a tactical isolation. Agent Miller walked in first, his eyes immediately assessing the layout of the room—the towering rows of books, the heavy velvet drapes that had been drawn closed to shut out the red and blue strobes, the cold stone fireplace where the ashes of the shorted-circuit fire had finally turned black. He pulled a compact, matte-black electronic device from his topcoat pocket, clicked a switch on the side, and watched as a tiny, green light began to sweep across the casing. The device remained silent—no chirps, no high-frequency whines. The room was entirely dead.

"I’m just stating facts," she muttered, rolling her eyes. . With my lips folded into a thin line, I nodded slowly, "Then go ahead, keep going with whatever plans you have. I’m not going to stop you."

Miller say it. Dr. Miller sighed again, but this time he did so out of clear annoyance. “James, your father was my friend. For a very long time. In some ways, I still consider him a friend. I went to high school with him, your mother, Beta Robert, and Margie too. I was there when they got married; I was there when you, Stephanie, and Lily were born. But sometimes our friends are not who we think that they are. Sometimes they hide parts of themselves from us. Sometimes they hide parts of themselves from themselves as well."
