The single clap echoed through the silent ballroom. Everyone turned. An older man stood near the back of the room, dressed in a dark tailored suit. His silver hair was combed neatly, his expression thoughtful rather than shocked. Victor’s eyes narrowed immediately. “Mr. Harrington,” he said slowly. Several reporters whispered the name. Arthur Harrington. One of Vale Corporation’s largest shareholders. If he spoke, the board listened. Harrington continued clapping slowly as he walked forward.

All of the words seem to bleed together, but there are three at the end that I can make out crystal clear: ‘he’s finally here’. I freeze, forgetting to breathe for a second. She can only be talking about one person- the same person that I’ve heard her obsessively talk about for days now. Alpha Xavier, the leader of the shadow pack. I could see the whole of New York from where I was standing and all its impressive night lights. “What are you talking about?” I asked as I slowly turned around. I was calm while he was angry.
