Everything looked washed in gray-green shadow. She could lie. She had lied before. She had survived because she knew when the truth was too dangerous to give away. But Warren was not Damian. He was not looking for weakness to exploit. He was looking for enough information to keep people alive, and the fact that she could recognize the difference now made her chest feel strange. “The Watchers study patterns,” she said carefully. “They observe, adapt, and test reactions. This one has watched the settlement for days. It knew we were preparing to leave. It knew the road we would take.”

Vera asked curiously. “Death, my lady death,” The man’s silver eyes narrowed as he walked closer towards Vera, “I heard you are a Watcher.” He said and dropped his head in such a way that he was studying Vera with wide eyes. “And you believed it?” Vera raised her brow. “Emm, you see, sometimes one does not always need a firm conviction to believe something that has been burning the bush like a wildfire. I am seeking out a Watcher because I need the help of one. And as you can see, the rumors have lead me straight to you.” Captain Ur explained hurriedly.

And because now, they were both circling each other, hungry, suspicious, ready to tear the world apart. All she had to do was wait for the inevitable. That night, the first Watcher didn’t sleep. He paced instead, back and forth across the cabin, knife never leaving his hand. His eyes cut constantly to the windows, the storm beyond, the shifting dark. Mara lay curled on the couch, pretending to doze, but her mind was sharp and bright. She could feel the second’s presence pressing at the edges of the storm. The clash was coming. The trap was already baited

To be honest, I had seen it so often that it didn't surprise me anymore. Sure enough, Hailey started listing my crimes. "All I did was give him a watch. How dare you threaten him? Apologize to him right now, or I'm going to demote you!" Without waiting for my response, she dialed Jaxon's number and put the call on speaker. I could barely say a word before he started his wounded act. "I'm the one who should apologize, Ms. Miller. I shouldn't have accepted your gift if it was going to make Mr. Chase so mad. I'll return the watch. Please just tell Mr. Chase to stop targeting me at work."

Stacy laughed as she exclaimed I have to earn as much money as I can in the next year so we can ride to school in style. Stacy and Sandra arrived at school and parted ways as they went to their classes. Stacy walked into her home room class oblivious to the fact that in the shadows watching her walk to school was a lone figure with an old grey hoodie that had seen better days. He had listened to the young girls talk about the babysitter stalker and thought to himself just how wrong young Stacy was. He had laid low for awhile since the last time, but it would seem that is was time for another appearance.

'I'm not one of them and right now, you should be very fucking thankful that I'm not, otherwise things would be very different. I swallowed. 'What are they?' 'The ones you saw on New Year's Eve. The ones you saw on the train today. They're Watchers. Put here on Earth to watch for people like you. People who see too much.' You see too much. You shouldn't see. 'I don't understand.' My throat felt raw, my eyes misting up in fear. 'That guy on the train, he said the same thing. He said I see too much. What does that even mean?'

The impact against my wounds made my vision go momentarily dark. They brought shovels and chisels, screaming profanities. "If our lives are going to be miserable, your old man isn't going to rest easy in hell either!" Every time I tried to stop them, they would rain down brutal kicks and punches on me. When Dawn and Felix heard the news, they rushed into the memorial park, closely trailed by a crowd of reporters thrusting microphones in their faces. "Ms. Arnold, your scandal has been trending as one of the hottest topics for the past few days. Are these allegations regarding Frank fabricating evidence true?"
