Alex screamed from a stretcher, his face covered in dust and blood. Then he spotted Maddie and me standing there, both safe and on our feet. He went still. A second later, he broke down. "Kayla... I'm sorry. I should've listened to you. That corner wasn't safe. The ceiling came down on us. Rainee lied. She got us all hurt!" I looked at him coldly. They'd made their choice. They'd gambled with their own lives. "Over here! More survivors!" A rescuer's shout rang out from deep in the rubble.

“We might as well tell her because she’s not leaving here alive anyway.” My heart stopped. Fear hit me so hard it felt physical.. This was it, we were no more pretending. If I wanted even the smallest chance to survive, I needed information. I needed them talking. I needed to understand what the hell was happening. I straightened slightly despite the pain, forcing strength into my voice. “Fine,” I said. Their eyes snapped back to me. “I heard you,” I continued, my chest rising and falling unevenly. “I heard everything.” I swallowed hard.

“Jesus. Fine.” He stepped back toward the bedroom, muttering something under his breath about needing coffee. Evelyn barely heard him. Her eyes stayed fixed on the floating blue interface only she could see. 3.7% survival probability. The number sat there calmly. Clinical. Unemotional. As if Evelyn's death were already calculated. A cold knot tightened low in her stomach. In her first life, she and Damian survived almost eight months before the alleyway. Eight months of starvation, infection zones, freezing nights, and watching people become animals.

Wasting time trying to run away from a Level 9 would just be inviting embarrassment from not knowing his own capability. Anyway, he was not fearful of death. At least not as much as a normal person. Everyone granted a system and survived until now differed in talent, stats, and luck, but all of them learned to become survivor nonetheless, their courage greater than anyone else. Eithan was no exception. He did not shy away upon being examined blatantly by Bathory. Without removing his eyes from the threatening woman, he opened his mouth as he bowed, "Eithan Meyer, Host 98, at your service, Your Excellency. I beg your pardon for the blunder earlier..."

I look away, unable to watch the ones that are unable to survive without whatever was in those tubes. “At the door, Zion,” Adriana warns. I swing the door open just as the guard turns the corner, rifle ready, but I’m faster and take the shot, hitting him between the eyes. Milena lowers the tubes, and we get the survivors; there are only 5 who are alive. We move as fast as we can, even though this will slow us down. “Leave them, and move,” Uncle’s voice comes. I know he’s right, but… I lift three up, tossing them on my shoulders as the ones who can walk a little better stagger along blindly.

Soon after Tsao's group reunited, the wolves retreated ending the battle as quickly as it started. Among the survivors there were few standing, making Tsao realize how close they were to end up among the casualties. When he met bob he was about to fight a wolf barehanded and Anne would have been a sacrifice just to earn a couple seconds more to a lowly scum who wouldn't even fight for himself. Some people were mourning the dead while others walked around trying to help any survivors. Tsao noticed that there were those who would die after a single bite and those who survived even the most gruesome wounds, but still perished due to blood loss or lack of treatment.

Nora hugged him tightly. "I want Alex to be happy and safe. Why can't David protect him like he should. He is a true blood after all." Matt pressed his face further in the crook of Nora's neck. "It'll be alright Matty. What matters is that Alex is safe." Nora drops the subject. "But baby is...." Before he could complete, he heard a gasp from behind causing both of them to turn around. "A-Alex..... Both of them are, okay? Alive?" Catlin said. Nora and Matt shared a look and then looked back at Catlin.
