You’re nothing without those.” As I spoke, I could see the flicker of uncertainty in his eyes, but he quickly masked it with a scowl. “You’ll regret this,” he warned, but I could sense the cracks in his bravado. “No, Howard,” I replied firmly. “I won’t regret standing up for myself. You should try it sometime.” With that, I pulled my wrist free from his grip, feeling a surge of empowerment. I turned and walked away, knowing that I had finally taken a stand against the man who had tried to define me by his narrow views.

Alex exhaled slowly, like he was holding himself back. “I hate this,” he said. “I hate that they think they own you.” “They don’t,” I said. “They try,” he corrected. I sank into a chair, pressing my palms together. “Maybe I’m not built for this,” I said quietly. “Maybe I thought I was stronger than I am.” Alex crouched in front of me, forcing me to meet his eyes. “Strength isn’t ever breaking,” he said. “It’s standing up after.” “I’ve been standing my whole life,” I whispered. “I’m tired.”

“My advice is: stop bending yourself into shapes to please people who will love you one day and flay you the next. Let them judge. Let them scream. You sing. You stand. And if they want a monster to point at while they absolve themselves of complicity, let them use me.” His voice drops on that last line. He steps closer, almost close enough to touch. “I will stand beside you,” he says. “On stage. In court. In a grocery store. In front of cameras. Behind them. I will take every insult they aim at you and wear it like a suit if that’s what it takes to keep you upright.” The simplicity of it punches the air out of me. “That’s not how it works,” I say weakly. “They won’t separate us that neatly.

Her voice lowered. “Maybe then they’ll stop treating us like displaced wolves they’re doing favors for.” Her eyes stayed fixed on me. “Maybe then they’ll understand they can’t trample over us while we bow our heads and thank them for it.” She pulled her hand out of mine. “Because we cannot.” Her voice sharpened. “We stand our ground.”
