Behind her, the elevator lights flickered one more time — once, then twice — before going still.

Alex’s voice was low but urgent. The kind of tone that didn’t allow for hesitation — the one that always made people listen.
She nodded, though it was barely more than a twitch. Her throat hurt when she tried to answer — phantom pressure still lingering, like the ghost of a hand that had almost crushed the air out of her.
