TARA'S POV Monday morning was always stressful for me either at the hospital or my charity foundation. I was on off duty at the hospital, so I decided to be at the foundation, Tara Banks Domestic Violated Women Foundation. The foundation was meant for the voiceless women to seek justice and helped to overcome their trauma. I picked a recent case file on my table to study it but was distracted by my phone ringing tone. Maggie grew serious, “Ya must promise to take care of this book. ‘Tis older than this old house. Don’t let anyone touch it, not even your brother. Promise?” Tara nodded in agreement. There was something sacred about the whole scene. She felt like she was pledging before God. She would keep the secrets of the book close to her until told otherwise. When Maggie got up to leave, Tara ran into the coat room to get her car keys to drive her home. When she had returned to the living room, it was quiet. "My treat." "On my way!" Tara whooped, hanging up. Shama jumped off her bed and threw on fresh clothes. Before rushing out, she paused at the door and glanced back at her room, where the comic book lay open on her bed. With a smile, she shut the door behind her. As soon as the door clicked shut, an unsettling silence filled the room. The comic book glowed softly, its pages flipping on their own as the ink slowly vanished, leaving the paper blank. From the darkness, a voice whispered: "It’s time."

Tara dropped into the chair beside me hard enough to rattle the table. “Good, you’re both here,” she announced. “You say that like we were at risk of being kidnapped,” I said. “You were at risk of being boring.” “That’s less dramatic.” “Is it?” Tara Quinn had never once entered a room quietly in her life. She wore her dark hair tied back in a high ponytail, had a runner’s build that made even sitting still look temporary, and gave off the energy of somebody permanently halfway through a dare. She was clever enough to keep up with Leonard in class and reckless enough to make both of us regret being seen with her in public at least once a week.

The little pup did not understand her birthright or any elders that might guide her. She was completely enslaved to the savagery of her own instincts.

GIA O'LEARY I spotted Tara the moment I walked into the café. She sat in the far corner by the window, wearing all black like she was mourning someone. A sleek turtleneck, dark jeans, black gloves, and a face cap that shadowed most of her face. She looked like she’d either lost someone or was about to bury something, maybe her conscience, though I doubted she had one to begin with. I smirked to myself.

“She is only accepting it because she trusts me. But she is not happy. She does not even think I am doing the right thing.” “Zara is careful.” Tara said softly. “That is why you hired her.” “I know. But I am tired of being careful. I am tired of fighting and being strong all the time.” Tara was quiet for a moment. Then she whispered, “then stop.” “Stop what?” I asked in surprise. “Stop fighting so hard. Relax and let things happen.” I looked at her and whispered back. “I hope I am not shooting myself in the leg. I have never done this before. Not even with Damon. And I am actually scared.”
