Was I so blind, so desperate for affection, that I had misread every sign, every fleeting moment of connection?
I buried my face in the thin pillow, the coarse fabric scratching against my skin. The pain was unbearable, a crushing weight on my chest. Tears streamed down my face, soaking the pillowcase. I cried until my body was wracked with sobs, until exhaustion finally claimed me, pulling me into a fitful, dream-haunted sleep.
