I said walking up to the door opening it to see a man with a blue delivery shirt on . "Hi thanks for bringing my delivery, you can just place them over there to the right." I said pointing. " Yes ma'am" he said walking off the porch back to his truck opening up the bed then he lowered it down. Walking back into the house letting him do his job without me peking over his shoulder . I waited till he was done so I decided to check some websites that sell dance poles. I only found two sites that ship and the price was reasonable so I ordered one of each of the two I liked. By the time I was done, so was the delivery man. So for his work I made him a glass of lemonade that I made yesterday.

For books and art classes and impractical sweaters. For building a life, not just surviving one. This is proof I deserve to exist beyond utility. I stare at the breakdown. It's not a fortune. It won't last forever. But it's mine. And it's enough to keep me alive long enough to get free. I open a new document and write a letter I'll never send. Dear Grandmother, I don't know if you can read this wherever you are. But I need to say thank you. I'm sick. You probably knew I would be someday—the trust clause was too specific to be coincidence. Myelodysplastic syndrome. Pre-leukemia. I'm in treatment.

I was just too stupid to realize it. I forced a smile at the little girl. She waved and ran off, taking the piece of my heart she touched with her. After I gathered myself to call a cab home, a notification popped up on my phone—a notification from Miranda Rowe. She was Rolf's childhood friend. She'd posted a short update. [With you here, I don't feel so sad.] The picture showed Rolf feeding her. They seemed really in love. I painfully shut my phone and turned toward a nearby little bar.

"What are they saying? Threatening to burn what little grain we have left? Boasting about all our people they have murdered?" Tobias looked up and took a deep breath. "No..." he said, holding the letter out to me, "They are offering us their... help." I looked over to Rose in confusion before stepping forward and taking the letter out of his hand. I skimmed over it. "Dear Alpha Brynn, I'm writing to offer you help during this time of struggle. Blah, blah, blah. My lands persevered through the trials of this year and remained fertile. Yada, yada. We have grain and will consider negotiating trade with you. Blah, blah, blah. Kind Regards, Alpha Rivers of the Pheonix pack."

At school, I had a nickname. They called me "Mister Wait-Your-Turn." I waited for the sneakers my brother had grown tired of, the backpack my sister thought was ugly, and the phones my parents had already cracked the screens of. Even when it came to taking a shower, I had to wait until everyone else was done. A week ago, Mom had promised me, "On the day of your college entrance exam, you won't have to wait your turn for the shower." So when I finally stumbled into the bathroom, drenched in sweat and smelling awful, I thought my turn had finally come. I was halfway through working up a lather when someone started pounding on the door. "Come out. Let your brother go in." My eyes stung,
