The day after the execution, Alpha River arrived from Moonstone Pack. She was young, maybe thirty, with kind eyes and an earnest expression. She brought gifts and formal apologies and a genuine desire to make amends. We spoke for hours. She told me about overthrowing the old leadership, about discovering records of my poisoning, about the guilt her pack felt for their complicity. “We cannot undo what was done to you,” River said. “But we can commit to being better. To protect wolves like you rather than harming them. To stand with the assembly rather than against it.”

She kept her voice steady, though her hands trembled slightly as she plated the meat. River laughed. The sound was mocking. "The Alpha will eat at the feast. He doesn't need your cheap meals, Nora. Do you really think a few herbs and a medium-rare steak are going to make him forget who you are?" Nora bit her lip. "I'm his wife." "You're a replica," River snapped.
