She climbed the steps, crossed the threshold, and tried to ignore the way the wolf inside her went completely, inexplicably alert. Just adrenaline, she told herself. Just the territory. Just being back. She kept walking. End of Chapter One.

The Woundmaidens seized Kaerith’s chain and dragged her toward the door, through the twisting tunnels of Murnokh, past rusted gates and bone lanterns.

The full moon is my curse, my chain and my executioner. “Shit!” I curse out loud. I lift my head slowly, eyes drawn to the glow pouring across the floor. It touches me, and my body reacts instantly. My pulse spikes. My breath shortens. The beast inside me stirs. “Not tonight,” I whisper hoarsely. “Not…..” The rest of the words die in my throat as a sharp pain rips through my chest. My bones crack. My claws extend, curling like blades. My vision blurs at the edges until the world swims in shades of red and silver.

"What are you trying to do?" "What can I do?" Clayton shrugged. "I'm just a lowly beastkin." No sooner had the words left his mouth than he lunged at Salem. Terrified, Salem instantly shifted into his beast form. The black wolfhound instinctively lunged at Clayton, its sharp teeth sinking viciously into his arm. The Beast thrashed violently, breaking through one of the magical bindings as if it were nothing more than smoke. One of the Darkbreeds was too slow. Too close. It struck him with a single swipe. And he didn’t get up. Something snapped inside me. Not my wolf. That was gone. Something else. Something human.

Its muscular body was both intimidating and alluring, and I found myself unable to look away. The beast took a step closer, its golden eyes never leaving mine. "What are you doing out here, little one?" it asked, its voice deep and rumbling, like distant thunder. I swallowed hard, trying to find my voice. "I-I heard stories about you," I stammered, my heart pounding in my chest. "And I wanted to see if they were true." The beast chuckled, a low, husky sound that sent a shiver down my spine. "And what do you think now that you've seen me?" it asked, taking another step closer.

She sings, "My dreamer of dreams, where will you dwell? Will you make your bed in heaven? Or will you stay in hell? Will you meet your maker or remain the co-creator? My dreamer, deep dreamer, make your presence known." The earth starts rumbling beneath me. The entire island quakes. I hear cows mooing and dogs barking. My entire body trembles as I repeat my mother's chant. My back splits open as the beast begins to rise. The baby begins to cry, and I open my eyes. Seeing my monstrous form, he squeals in terror. While he cries and cries, I look deep inside his soul. The two of us become one, and I consume him whole. Mrs. Dotson says, "That's all for today."
