She turned to a page where the history and image of the crow was shown. Janeka got her mind back to why they were here and what they were going to defeat. “I see your mind is caught up with the black book.” Lelia said, chewing her lips. “That's what we want, isn't it?” Janeka said.

Damien urged, his hand still clutching hers. Elena pushed herself harder, her lungs burning. They rounded the corner, her car finally in sight. Relief surged through her as she reached for the door handle, but Damien yanked her back just as a figure emerged from the shadows. The man was dressed in black, his face obscured by a mask. In his hand was a crowbar, the source of the chilling sound. “Get behind me,” Damien said, stepping forward to shield her. The man tilted his head, his stance casual, almost mocking. “You’re slipping, Black,” he said, his voice muffled but laced with amusement. “You used to be harder to track.”

CHAPTER 58: TRUTH SPELL. Soaring over the city, a crow flew to the coliseum. It perched at the top of the building, adjusting itself as it cawed. It blinked its eyes, revealing a purple coloration. It turned its head from one side to another, as though taking a view of the whole arena, and all that went on within. After a while, it cawed again and then flew off, heading toward a secluded part of Winterhill. It arrived at the old Grayson mansion and perched on a window, letting out a loud caw.

Far above, the sky was already beginning to dim at the edges, like a lid lowering over an eye that didn’t sleep. On the threshold, Kaelira paused and spoke not to Zevran or Taren but to the world itself. “When the Black Moon rises,” she said, “let it watch.” And then, without looking back, she added the only promise that felt like truth: “We’re coming for you.” The arch shivered. The Court’s gates loomed. Somewhere ahead, a war-scar smiled. The bond thrummed once—thin, fierce, alive. And the three of them walked into winter.

Zoran and Naelis immediately followed her gaze, their primordial instincts on high alert. Perched on a low branch was a large, jet black crow. Its eyes weren't the usual bead-like birds' eyes, they were cold, obsidian voids that seemed to be absorbing in everything they were saying. The bird sat perfectly still, its head tilted in a way that looked disturbingly human. The moment it realized it had been spotted, the crow let out a harsh, mocking caw. It spread its wings and took flight, disappearing into the dark canopy of the surrounding forest before Zoran could even think of shifting.
