I find a table in the very back corner, tucked behind a big stone pillar. It’s perfect. It’s dark. It’s invisible. I sit down and open my book—a worn copy of Theoretical Astrophysics. I hide the cover behind a paper bag. If people knew the creepy janitor was reading about black holes, they’d only find a new way to mock me. I take a bite of my apple, my eyes scanning the room. Across the hall, the Knights' table is a scream of noise and gold. They sit in the middle, lit up by the tall gothic windows. Alan Voss is at the head of the table, looking like a king carved out of ice and ink.

the auctioneer said, his voice smooth and confident, "we have a truly special participant tonight. Let's start the bidding! "Ten thousand," a dark voice calls from the floor, and I spin in surprise, searching for the source. The man in black winks at me as he takes a sip of his drink. My body floods with heat. This man will pay ten grand to spend an hour with me. Will he be disappointed if I don't have sex with him? Surely, he must know he's just winning my company. I can't sleep with him. Jared wouldn't let that happen…would he?

The air stank of death, and the ground pulsed beneath my boots, alive with dark energy. Then came the whisper. “You shouldn’t have come here, Alpha.” I spun, knife drawn, heart hammering against my ribs. But there was no one there. “Luca,” Ethan said, his voice shaking. I followed his gaze—and froze. At the edge of the ruins stood a figure cloaked in shadows. Its eyes glowed crimson, and its presence was suffocating. The Echo. It didn’t move, didn’t attack. It just watched, those glowing eyes boring into me as if it could see straight through my soul.

“That’s not who I am.” “Not yet,” the Echo whispered, her hands wreathed in black fire that curled upward, claw-like. “But the day you stop holding back? That’s the day you’ll feel alive.” Kael snarled as his double grinned at him from across the pool. The Echo carried the same scar over one brow, but deeper, as though the wound had been left to fester. “You think you hide it well, don’t you?” the Echo mocked. “That gnawing truth—that you’re nothing without them. That if they left you behind, you’d wither. You don’t follow for loyalty. You follow because you’re too afraid to walk alone.”

Deciding to set the pizza down on the table first, I picked up the remote and handed it to him. As Jonathan reached towards the remote, he unexpectedly leaned in closer. Startled, I instinctively leaned backward, causing our eyes to meet. At that moment, I couldn't help but notice the sparkle in his mesmerizing blue eyes. His gaze gradually shifted towards my lips, leaving me breathless with curiosity. Just as I felt myself getting lost in the intensity of his gaze, a loud crash erupted from the kitchen, breaking the spell between us. We both turned in alarm, our hearts pounding, wondering what had just happened.

He sat hunched over his desk, typing like a madman, eyes flicking across a wall of screens showing blinking red warnings and moving data trails. “They’re using stuff I’ve never seen before!” he yelled. “New types of hacks. Smart. Fast. Almost alive!” Amelia’s voice came through the earpiece. “Don’t let them break the outer firewall. That’s where the Echo is.” While Cipher fought back upstairs, something strange started happening downstairs in the Echo’s chamber. I wasn’t alone. The whispers twisted tighter, overlapping like a hundred threads being pulled into a single knot. My ears rang with them, my breath trembling in my chest as the cold dug deeper, like needles piercing through my skin. Then, suddenly, all the fragments collapsed into one voice. It was low, rich, and endless, as though it had been waiting for this moment. “You,” it murmured, the sound curling through the darkness like smoke. “You are the prize. And the weapon.” My heart hammered so hard it felt like it might burst. The voice didn’t stop. It unfurled slowly, deliberately, each syllable a blade drawn across my soul.
