The book club ladies were in fine form this afternoon. Margaret Thompson sat primly on the floral couch in a rented out space close to the library, a half-empty teacup balanced on her knee, her Bible study notes open on the coffee table. The conversation had started with the latest Christian fiction novel — something about redemption and resisting temptation — but it had drifted, as it always did, into more personal territory. Gossip dressed up as prayer requests. “Speaking of temptation,” one of the women said, lowering her voice with dramatic concern, “have you heard what’s going around about that poor Thompson boy?”

He coughed once to clear his throat and began reading from the book. “After the destruction, many people wondered how it started. Who gave the order to kill us? Why did it start? What was the reason? According to a small page boy who escaped the killings, this was the conversation he overheard. We do not know if his story is true, but only this series of events seems to make any sense.” Draynon coughed once more and continued the recitation.

So…how do you suggest we find them?” He looked at her closely, “you are asking the wrong questions…again.” She closed the book and placed it on the table, “and the right questions would be? Enlighten me if you may please…” Adjusting his sitting posture, “Who removed the pages and why did they remove them. These are the questions you should be asking,” he responded. She picked the glass of blood, “as for the why…we both know. Unless you have something about the ‘who part’…I am listening.”

My gaze moved to Trevor "Now I need you to tell me why you said this book is dangerous " " it's not important " I can see that Trevor is avoiding the question, my eyes lower to see him clenching his fist, his eyes looking restrained like a bad memory just resurfaced. So please tell me " " if you try opening it and it doesn't choose you, you will die in two weeks " his gaze met mine "We were five who created the book, my four friends died but still I never got to force the book open, and that's why I was safe"

The same way when he kept quiet when Hazel and his father embarrassed me. I shook my head, trying to not flare up in public. “What made you think that this would be helpful for the festival? Don't give me the flimsy reason that this would be helpful for us.” “I…I thought…” he started but I cut in. “What? Every member of the book club is gay?” I asked, sarcasm laced in my voice. “Arian, don't misunderstand this.” I scoffed. I shouldn't misunderstand what is clear like crystal. Is he kidding me right now?

As I perused the books, I could feel Aidan’s gaze on me. The shop, much like the one downstairs, boasted an impressive selection. These were books to be enjoyed in the coffee lounge, not purchased or taken home. A smile tugged at my lips as I reached the romance novel section. So, Well Thumbed had these too. I wondered if they had hidden gems, perhaps something I hadn’t read or that Uncle Alex’s book club, Bound To Please, hadn’t discovered yet.

The hope that survived long enough to become real. Someone had carried it. Protected it. Believed in it. For generations. For years beyond counting. The library door stood open behind her. Warm light spilling into the rooftop garden. A bridge between memory and possibility. Then Hope asked the question only Hope would ask. "So..." Elowen looked at her. His quiet breathing, the subtle shift of his shoulders, even the way his fingers rested idly on the edge of his own book—it all pulled me in like gravity. As I lowered the volume, our eyes met inadvertently. The golden afternoon light streaming through the tall windows caught in his dark irises, turning them warm and intense. Nathan leaned forward slightly, a slow, playful smile curving his lips. “Are you a thief?” I blinked, caught off guard. “Huh? What are you talking about? Why would you ask that?”

He asked as he adjusted his eye. “Anyone who can be powerful enough to tear this book with charm can find a way to get into this place to execute this and we don’t know how far they can go for this cause we don’t know what this means to them.” I responded and he nodded thoughtfully as he stared at the book as if it had the answers to the questions that were running through his mind. “Who could have torn out this page?” He asked as he stared at me with a confused gaze.

I mutter them. Marlik stares at me like he wants to kill me. But he doesn't speak again. He can feel that I am not afraid, but I'm sure he doesn't have the idea that I have stepped off the path they set for me. And now I'm walking one they cannot follow. I do not stay until the end of the meeting. I turn before they dismiss me. Before Marlik finds more blame to hurl or more fire to spit. As I walk, I feel the weight of the book in my sleeve. The one they think is lost. The book that holds the real rites. The cookbook. The council made me steal it from the keeper, and I have to return it.
