My fingers trace the torn edges carefully, like they’re made of glass, like they’ll fall apart if I hold them too tight. The paper is stained, corners smudged, some pages singed at the ends. But it’s still here. It's my favourite book. The only one I could save.

I threw it open on the mattress, flipping through the heavy pages as fast as my fingers could move. Eileen ran into the room, panting slightly as she watched me. “Thalia, please talk to me. Is everything okay? What are you looking for?” A second later, the heavy oak door pushed open again, and Ragnar arrived. His face was etched with worry, his large frame filling the doorway. “Thalia, what's wrong? Why did you run off?” I didn't reply to either of them. My eyes were locked onto the binding of the book. Right where the dark magic chapter was supposed to be, a clean, sharp edge showed that a page had been violently torn out.

It no longer sounded entirely like Quinton. Unlike before, when smoke had drifted from his fingers, this time a thick white vapor poured from his hand. It twisted through the air like a living mist. A chill swept through the room. The chandelier trembled. The curtains began to move despite the windows being shut. My eyes widened. The book suddenly started flipping through its pages at an alarming speed. The pages turned so fast that they became a blur. Then the book lifted into the air by itself. I slowly stood. A page turned. Then another. Then another. The remaining blank pages flipped gently in the breeze. Until the book reached its final section. A single folded page. Different from the others. Sealed. Arthur noticed immediately. “Was that there before?” “No,” Naomi whispered. It hadn't been. Or perhaps it had. Waiting.

She placed the leather-bound book on her lap with reverence, brushing away the lingering dust with her trembling fingers. The book creaked open like it hadn’t been touched in years. Its pages were yellowed and fragile, but tucked between random paragraphs were faint markings—notes written in delicate, slanted handwriting. Leah’s heart thudded as she scanned the lines, searching for meaning. On the third chapter, Sofia’s voice came alive. “Nothing is ever truly what it seems. For just a second the pain stopped. I quickly opened up the book to a random page once the aching in my chest started back up. The first page I set eyes on didn't even have a fighting chance. I stabbed it and tore though it not even giving anyone a chance to react. Slowly the page started to catch on fire and ash instantly formed. Once the page completely turned to ash I lifted up the book and brushed off the pieces that use to be the page. A siren started inside the room and multiple screens filled the walls. I spun around going through all universes and landed on the universe I knew it was reporting on.

The book is massive, easily over two thousand pages, the weight of it pulling at my arms. Of course it’s this complicated. I bite back my frustration, reminding myself that this might be the only chance I have to get answers. I carry the book to an alcove, the leather seat creaking as I lower myself into it. The book lands on the desk with a soft thud, dust rising around it in a lazy cloud. The first page is brittle, the ink faded, but I manage to make out the opening line as I try carefully not to tear the paper:

I turned the page one by one looking into each and every corner of the page. I was almost at the end of the pages and didn't find anything. There were just two pages left. I turned the page and felt stickiness on my hands.

At first glance, it was just a record of betrayal—shell companies, offshore routing numbers, and signatures that looked suspiciously like forgeries of all four brothers. "Wait," Lila said, leaning in. She pointed to the bottom corner of page twelve. "Look at the page numbers. They aren't sequential." I frowned, looking closer. The page numbers didn't run 1, 2, 3. They ran 11, 4, 18, 9, 1. "It's a book cipher," I whispered, my heart beginning to race. I grabbed a notepad and a pen. Using the page numbers as coordinates against the first letter of the first word on each page, a message began to emerge. It wasn't a list of traitors. It was a warning from the Chairman’s past.
